CHINA CLAY
What is CHINA CLAY/ KAOLIN
Kaolin clay, commonly known as China clay, is naturally occurring clay that is mainly found in soil that has formed as a result of rock weathering.
The mineral kaolinite, a hydrous aluminum silicate produced by the breakdown of minerals like feldspar, is the main component of kaolin.
Chemically, kaolin is a hydrated aluminum silicate containing Al2O3. 2SiO2. 2H2O.
Kaolin comes from the Chinese word kaolin, which meaning “high ridge.”The term “high ridge” refers to the hill in south-eastern China where the clay was discovered and first used.
The mineral’s tiny particle size scatters light, contributing to its white appearance. Kaolin or China Clay is soft, earthy, and usually white in colour.

Uses of China Clay
Paper Manufacturing
Ceramics
The high fusion temperature and white firing characteristics of China Clay make it particularly suitable for the manufacture of sanitary ware, tableware, wall and floor tiles and refractories.
Cosmetics
Kaolin processed is used as 100% natural ingredients for face creams, face masks and cosmetics. They are appreciated for their superior capabilities of mortifying skin, and absorbing sebum and other impurities.
Paints
China Clay is an excellent natural opacifier and a partial replacement for titanium dioxide. Kaolin has been proved time and again to stand on these parameters and acts as an ideal additive in high gloss paints. Kaolin is also used as an extender and flattening agent in paints.
Rubber & Plastic
Kaolin-grades processed at JJM are used for filling rubber to improve its mechanical strength and resistance to abrasion.
Pharma
Kaolin is used by reputed pharmaceutical manufactures for treating ailments, such as, mild-to-moderate diarrhea, severe diarrheal (dysentery), and cholera. Kaolin is also used to relieve soreness and swelling inside the mouth caused by radiation treatments. It also acts as a filler, as lubricants in manufacturing pills; disintegrates; ant caking and thickening agents; binders and diluents; emulsifiers; and carriers of biologically active molecules for improving drugs bioavailability
Soap and Detergents
Kaolin is used essentially as filler in soap and detergent production. It also gives the structure and acts as a riser, but the most important function of kaolin is to reduce cost of production.
Electrical Industry
It is used for electrical insulation, high voltage insulation compounds electrical wires.
- In adhesives to modify rheology
- In the production of common smoking pipes in Europe and Asia
- In organic farming, as a spray applied to crops to deter insect damage, and in the case of apples, to prevent sun scald
- As whitewash in traditional stone masonry homes in Nepal (the most common method is to paint the upper part with white kaolin clay and the middle with red clay; the red clay may extend to the bottom, or the bottom may be painted black)
- As a filler in Edison Diamond Discs
- As an indicator in radiological dating since kaolinite can contain very small traces of uranium and thorium
- To soothe an upset stomach, similar to the way parrots (and later, humans) in South America originally used it (more recently, industrially-produced Kaolinite preparations were common for the treatment of diarrhea.
